Although the job description of HVAC contractors varies depending on the nature of their work, their typical duties involve installing, maintaining and repairing various appliances. To become highly trained professionals, HVAC contractors need to complete formal education i.e., a certification or an associate’s degree to develop foundational knowledge for state regulations.

 

How to Become an HVAC Licensed Technician in Ohio?

The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) provides state issued license to all commercial HVAC contractors. To obtain a state issued license, all applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Provide proof of work experience.
    • 5 years of apprenticeship under supervision of a licensed HVAC contractor

    OR

    • 3 years of business experience in HVAC as a registered engineer
  • Not have any convictions or a criminal record.
  • Have a minimum of $500,000 contractor liability coverage.
  • Pay the exam application fees.
  • Pass both written and practical examination.

 

What Types of HVAC Licenses Can I Get in Ohio?

Usually, all HVAC contractors are required to obtain the EPA Section 608 Certification/License. However, this certification/license is further divided into 4 types mentioned below:

  • (for small appliances).
  • (for high-pressure appliances).
  • (for low-pressure appliances).
  • (universal- handles all types of appliances).

Apart from these 4 types of the EPA Section 608 Certifications/Licenses, a few other nationwide organizations provide trade certifications. These organizations are:

  • Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES).
  • North American Technician Excellence (NATE).
  • HVAC Excellence.
